Palaeoloxodon antiquus adalah spesies gajah yang telah punah. Spesies ini berhubungan erat dengan gajah asia dan tinggal di Eropa pada masa Pleistosen pertengahan dan akhir (781.000–50.000 tahun yang lalu).
Deskripsi
Palaeoloxodon antiquus adalah spesies yang cukup besar; tinggi setiap individu dapat mencapai 4 m. Fosil seekor gajah jantan berusia 40 tahun yang ditemukan di Viterbo diperkirakan memiliki tinggi sekitar 3,81 m dan massa 11,3 ton, sementara contoh lain dari Montreuil memiliki massa sekitar 15 ton dan tinggi 4,2 m.[1] Kaki P. antiquus' sedikit lebih panjang dari gajah modern. Gajah ini diduga memiliki lidah sepanjang 80 cm yang dapat digunakan untuk menjangkau daun dan rumput.[2]
