Stephen David Daldry, CBE (Dorset, 2 mei 1961) is een Brits film- en theaterregisseur. Hij heeft voor zijn werken driemaal een Academy Award-nominatie gekregen en Tony Awards gewonnen.

Biografie

Jonge jaren

Daldry werd geboren als zoon van bankdirecteur Patrick Daldry en zangeres Cherry Thompson.^[1] Toen Daldry 14 was, stierf zijn vader aan de gevolgen van kanker.^[2]

Daldry volgde een opleiding aan de universiteit van Sheffield, waar hij voorzitter was van de Chairman of SuTCo (Sheffield University Theatre Company). Na zijn studie ging hij in de leer bij het Crucible Theatre. Tevens trainde hij aan de East 15 Acting School in Londen.

Carrière

Daldry begon zijn carrière in het Crucible Theatre, waar hij samen met Clare Venables veel producties regisseerde. Verder was hij actief als regisseur in het Manchester Library Theatre, Liverpool Playhouse, Stratford East, Oxford Stage, Brighton, het Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Gate Theatre, London (1989-92) en Royal Court Theatre (1992-98). Hij won als theaterregisseur prijzen op zowel Broadway als in het West End.

Daldry maakte zijn debuut als filmregisseur met Billy Elliot. Zijn volgende film was The Hours, waarvoor Nicole Kidman een Academy Award won voor beste actrice. Daldry regisseerde tevens een musicalversie van de film Billy Elliot: Billy Elliot the Musical. Dit leverde hem in 2009 een Tony Award op voor beste regisseur van een musical.

Daldry maakte een filmversie van The Reader, gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek. Daldry wilde in 2005 tevens een verfilming maken van Michael Chabons roman The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay^[3], maar dit project werd meerdere malen afgeblazen en opnieuw opgestart.^[4]

Persoonlijk leven

Daldry trouwde in 2001 met Lucy Sexton. Samen hebben ze een dochter, Annabel Clare, geboren in 2003.^[5][6]
